Jay Townley - Principal Consultant:
Townley has over 40 years of experience in the bicycle industry. He started as an employee in a bike shop; worked for the Schwinn Bicycle company for 24 years as Sales Promotion Manager, Director of Product Safety and Governmental Affairs, Assistant to the President, Vice President of Marketing, and Vice President of Purchasing. Townley owned and operated Venture Out Unlimited, a bicycle touring company, and recently served as President of Giant Bicycle Inc., as President and as Director of Browning Bicycle Component, L.L.C., and as Executive Director of The Bicycle Council, a former (non-profit) bicycle industry marketing association.
Currently Townley is the Event Producer for the Joint Bicycle Industry Education Conference. Related activities include serving on the Board of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin, the Board of the Youth Bicycle Education Network, the Board of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy and the Board of TransBike Systems. He is a Principal Consultant in Jay Townley & Associates, LLC a business service and consulting group and owner of The Bike Shop List, a mailing list company specializing in the Specialty Bicycle Retail Channel of trade. Jay Townley & Associates, LLC is affiliated with Z-Cam International, a Taiwanese product development trading company.
While at Schwinn, Townley was responsible for the Total Store retail program, for a $2 million marketing budget and the purchasing of $130 million in materials, services, and final product. He was responsible for $70 million in sales at Giant. He negotiated Schwinn's joint venture in Hungary and was a principal negotiator in the company's acquisition of CBI/Kestrel and Front Line Technology. Townley has supervised and managed departmental staffs with up to 15 employees, company divisions with up to 50 employees, and a company with 100 employees. He has served as chairman of the Bicycle Wholesaler Distributors Association (BWDA now the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association) statistical committe, and as the BWDA Vice President.
His list of consulting clients has included Interbike, EV Global Motors and TH!NK Mobility. The list currently includes the National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA), Xtracycle and Graber Products Inc. Townley writes a monthly column for the Trade Winds BicycleB2B web site and is a frequent speaker at industry trade shows and special events. (References available upon request.)
